Significant Histories of the Civil War
Click on the entries below for the full text of volumes 1-5 of the History of the United States, from the compromise of 1850 to the final restoration of home rule at the south in 1877, by James Ford Rhodes, 1910 [c.1892]. This is considered one of the finest histories of the Civil War and the events that led up to it. Rhodes later wrote History of the Civil War (1917), which won the Pulitzer Prize (see below).

Click here for the full text of History of the Civil War, 1861-1865, by James Ford Rhodes, 1917. This book is a one-volume history of the Civil War, published by MacMillan. It was a condensed version of his 5-volume history above that focuses exclusively on the Civil War. Rhodes received the Pulitzer Prize for this volume.
